Puppets are happening! An entire semester went by and I didn't update my film blog at all! Well now it has some stuff on it :) so yay! Check it out if you want to see some film progress stuff
I was feeling inspired so I started to do a colour script for my film. But i was too lazy to get my tablet so i used a mouse (i know it makes no sense) but here it is :) The top on was the original, I'm posting 2 because i cant decide which i like more! Also something is off with the colours of my main character...need to fiddle around with it!
Finished for now! I want to TRY a painting of her in her environment. I'm not much of a painter but I have this sudden urge to try to be good at it!
eee I got the new Tinkerbell. I'm excited!
Here it is! my Leica reel! based off of the reactions from the audience I got today at the screening (which generally seemed good!) I now see some things I have to change (mostly rearranging some panels to get gags to read a bit funnier!) I'm also very tempted to redo a lot of it...its the same plot, its just the execution of it would be a lot funnier... I'm going to thumbnail it out and see....
For anyone who has a second to watch it, please let me know what you think!! I'd love some feedback :) Thank you!!
A warm up sketch of Hermione from last week end! I coloured it in just to have some fun to take my mind off story boarding for a little bit! I'll be posting my rough fourth year film leica reel next week on wednesday after the big screening! I'm not posting it yet b/c I want to see/ hear what people's reactions will be when they see it for the first time in lecture. So watch for that post!! Hope everyone is having a great weekend!!
OK!! Sooo this design feels so much more like what I was trying to get at this entire time! It feels more "me" i guess! finally :') I did a bunch more sketches of her, but i wont post them until I clean them up in photoshop :) I feel like i'm on such a design roll today, and i dont want to stop! But my silly elective has gotten in the way :'( now its time to read!
also, i just realized i saved it with the wrong line layer on her breast plate! lol I cant do anything about it now because i left the photoshop file at school :'( I'll update this later i guess, for now you can look at her wonky boob!
(also couldnt decide if i liked her on a black or white bg so you get two! yay!)
I've been struggling with the style I want to go with for my film because it really turned into something a little more whacky (in terms of story) than i had originally planned! To help me decide i thought seeing her in 3D might help! This was my first ever maquette (i think!) and its a little rough around the edges, but hopefully i'll just get better with practice! I think the design will change still, theres lots to think about! i also cant decide if i should give her wings or not! decisions decisions!
also something i always think is weird/funny when i think about it: her design is inspired by a cupcake and a pig :D haha such a weird combination!
I havent drawn a picture of my mom since I was around 8 so I figured it was about time! Its almost her birthday too so its good timing :) In case your wondering about the scissors, no shes not an extreme couponer, shes a hairdresser! Also a ridiculous side note, she actually has a pair of pink scissors like those with a diamond in the middle. Oh my silly mom!
First the Uke! Totally inspired by a) a picture by Aurore Damant (that Amy posted on my facebook wall!) and b) the very very very beautiful blog of Kevin Kidney (he has the best name ever!)
such a great day of inspiration :) even though i had so much other stuff to get done, i saw too many beautiful things so i couldnt resist making something of my own! Its also my favorite time of year, even thogh the leaves havent started to change colour just yet, i've had that wonderful fall feeling all day! Its going to be an amazing year!
NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS! :D I got the spot in the stop motion studio!! Hoorrayyy! Now i can share the blog i made for my film :) CLICK HERE if you want to see it.
If you dont want to see it thats ok! I'll post some pictures here anyways :D
These are just a random jumble of stuff thats new. theres more on the film blog :) I made a ball and socket joint, and a rough test of replacement faces. I would never have known how to make any of that if it werent for some very kind stop motion animators that shared their techniques on their own blogs! Check them out if you want to be AMAZED by some serious talent!!
Also, i'm fairly sure that its pretty obvious, but everything on my film blog is so super rough!! the story needs so much work, and i've just been racking my brains trying to figure out how to do this thing! i have like 5 different ways i think i could tell this story, but i just need to pick ONE and test out the possibilities within that one... i'm still figuring stuff out and the more eyes i get on it the better! so if you watch it and have any suggestions for any gags or ways i could improve it, please let me know!! every little bit helps :)
I had an idea about a dad that cant get any sleep. Heres a panel :) Its kind of based off of some of the bed time shenanigans I used to pull as a child :)....i really should be working on my film lol
again just posting my roughest of scribbles that I'm normally terrified of sharing!
So I finished up my internship at House of Cool a few weeks ago :) It was amazing! for our last day they treated us to lunch at TIFF and our mentors Sarah, Jason and Rodrigo bought us moleskin story boarding sketchbooks! (I've use that sketchbook and i dont think i can go back to my 7 dollar ones!)Words cant describe how much I love that place :) Theres a picture of me and Perin Jumping on the boss's couch while he was away :) (totally stole it off of the house of cool blog!) Thanks to every one there, I had a wonderful time! They also called us back to do a little one week job so thats exciting! my first job in feature animation :)
Heres a really rough sculpt i did of my NEW film character! I changed my idea again but for the last time. Its about an opera singer...and thats all you need to know. for now. :)
also, i'll have a massive post and a film blog to share in about 20 days! I'm just working on a pitch package to get a spot in the stop motion studio at school right now, so I've been busy! Hopefully I'll get the spot!
be back soon! and sorry that this post has so many smiles and exclamation points i'm just excited haha
Its time to learn to not be afraid of people seeing my "bad" drawings. Thats the lesson i've been learning at my internship! so heres a bunch of drawings (some super rough, some more refined) of my film character! I'm trying to figure out what kind of girl she is, is she girly? is she a tomboy? i'm not sure, but i'm going to keep sketching stuff out and thinking and possibly hanging around my little cousin :)
oh boy! Its time for some replacement puppet faces!
top image is something (from a few weeks ago) i doodled using a cintiq for the first time at work (we have a TON at school i just didint like it at first!) but now that i've adjusted to a cintiq..i need to buy one for myself!! I can never go back to my tablet!
the others drawings are part of a possible design for a puppet that (hopefully!!) will have replacement faces :) i've still got a ton of drawing to do before i attempt that but i'm super excited!!! :D I'll post links to some amazing student film blogs that have quick tutorials on how to do this once i try it out! :)
Haha dont ask me about the title.. I had this idea, and i'm really not sure what i'm going to do with it... I guess it was just one of those heat stroke induced sort of ideas! we'll see how I feel about this in the next couple of days :)
I've been exploring designs for my fourth year film and I showed a bunch of these to Colin Jack and got some really great advice! I have to keep drawing and trying new stuff with these guys
Being around such amazingly talented and cool people every day is awesome! I've been super motivated to work really hard everyday, even though its really tiring getting very little sleep some days but i'm having a blast :)
heres a potential fourth year film character! she'll be a stop motion puppet, and she'll have a monster friend. i'm debating weather he'll be a 2D animated character or not still... They live in the forest together and catch fireflies!
yay i'm back! and i have a ton of work to share so i'll just get right to it!
I did a bit of a board for my 4th year film a few weeks back, but as i started it i realized how terrible it was going so i stopped! I think this particular incarnation of monster buddy will be put to rest, because its really not working . I'm playing around with other ideas and hopefully i'll think of something i'm happier with soon! I'm posting it so it will live on somewhere! but really these boards are awful..
the idea was to have it all a stop motion film except for the monster who would be a 2D animated character! I think i'm sticking with this basic idea, but i'm trying to take it somewhere...umm fantastical? haha i hardly know whats going on myself, but i guess thats part of the fun right :s
I also did a test of what the texture on the monster might look like
I wanted it to almost look like a drawing from the kids head. but all of this is being scrapped! A very good point that my story teacher pointed out was that i should have more of a reason for him to be 2D animated, like he should be able to fly around and not be so planted to the ground or SOMETHING like that! and i agree!
I'm not sure if i posted these but here are some very very early scribbles of the possible monsters...
BUT they're all going in the trash!
I also started my internship for the summer! I'm interning in Toronto at House of Cool :) things i've learned so far, animation studios are the best, commuting sucks, and people in Toronto are the nicest!
I feel SUPER lucky to have gotten this internship because the studio is so cool and the people that work there are beyond amazing! everyone is super talented, friendly and very helpful! Some of my favorite artists have worked there, so its an extra cool feeling! (check out the BLOG to see all the cool stuff that goes on there! They have a ping pong table and pie thursdays! :D )
The insane thing is, its a story internship, and anyone that knows me knows how i feel about boarding. I really admire people that actually CAN board, and i've always wished i could be better at it. but the truth is i really struggle with it and i'm hoping this internship will help me become (at least) not a total lost cause when it comes to story boarding! we'll see how i do in a couple of months i guess
I started a summer update blog to keep one of my friends posted on how stuff is going at the internship and in canada (shes awesome and got a position in LA!) and i drew her some sketches of me on the job
Me and my fellow intern Perin have been boarding on paper, and working on a table RIGHT in the middle of the studio which has been scary because people are walking by all the time....and you dont know whos sneaking a peak at your work! haha
apparently its a requirement to be super tall if you want to work at house of cool. but no one told me! i guess it doesnt matter if your an intern
this is actually what i look like every time i have to pitch or show someone my work!
and heres some drawings of food i've eaten!
Theres so much more to put up on the blog, but i think thats enough for now!
