Giant Fail on a Teeny Tiny Scale

ok sooo....i messed up :( i took 40 minutes to set up my camera so that wooley wasnt completely washed out on screen, then decided to animate my tiny puppet just for fun. tthhheeeennn i had like 40 minutes of animating time left.... yikes. disaster... why am i posting it? i dont know..:|
amazingly, i also messed up when exporting this too :s i guess it was just one of those days with me...

this actually makes me laugh everytime i watch it, he seems dumb in this :| no other word to describe it lol his hands just like slide off of the mushroom :S also..that camera shake when he falls...yes... totally on purpose. <--that was sarcasm

NEXT WEEK WILL BE THE WEEK!!!!! i'm going to do something portfolio worthy!!!! I MUST!!

I did another Wooley animation :) there has been an after class stop motion work period set up for us which is nice! this was done earlier this evening, so i was shaking off the cobwebs of almost a month of no puppet animation! also, i apologize for how awkward hes framed in the camera :( he was supposed to look up and do a happy wave, but this happened instead...lol i'll be sure to actually plan something and frame it up nicely next time :)

This is a little something I've been working on for my portfolio, she'll just be a small part so I thought it would be safe to share her :) Shes still lacking feet (i'm waiting on the magnets for them!) so thats why they're not exactly proper photos :P I'll post full body ones once shes completed anndd I'll post my concept drawings and paintings of her soon too!

Thanks to everyone who helped me out with this! especially in the compositing stage!! I would have been really lost without all of the help, and most importantly I learned a LOT from my class mates! Thanks again guys :)

This little project has been the source of so many late nights and physical pain, I'm glad to say its over :)

Now I'm going to continue working my butt off on my portfolio! That probably means I cant post much from it... third year seems to be the year of very little blogging :(

Wooley is finally done :) I cant wait to see how he animates too! I had a lot of goof ups with this guy (mainly the sculpt of his face, its waaayyy off from the original drawing) but I learned a whole lot from it. Not too shabby for a first puppet I guess ;)

I don't think I'll be able to animate him for at least a week D: I have a ton of neglected school work that I should get crackin' on! till next time i guess :)

Test from week 6

just a few tests i've done over the past 6 weeks of school (technically i've only animated for 5 days!)
I love stop motion class, this medium of animation is amazingly fun and so magical! i've been waiting for so long to try it out and i've been so stoked for it but now its confused me :( I dont know exactly what direction to head into.. but we'll see i guess! lets just hope i make the right decision!

anywhooo puppets on the way :) should be done by the end of reading week i hope!

The Hunger Games - Katniss, Peeta and the Pearl

I just finished reading the Hunger Games series last night, and my goodness was it amazing! I literally could not put them down :| I read all 3 in 5 days...(its easy reading and huge font) but still!!! I didnt get much work done, and then when i finally did finish i couldnt get my mind off of it! So I had to do this little drawing as a way to kind of get emotional closure (lol i know but the series really touched me!) anyways, its Peeta and Katniss from a scene in Catching Fire (dont worry I wont spoil anything!) where he gives her a pearl :) some of the relationships are just SO sweet! i kind of made Peeta look a little more the way i imagined Finnick for some reason (my favorite character by far!) anywhoo i'm going to get back to work now b/c i finally think i'm done with this week long obsession that I couldnt stop thinking about even in my sleep!

Also Linkin Park is like the soundtrack to this series in my mind :0 Shadow Of The Day is what i listened to pretty much on repeat when i painted this :)

Action Analysis - Miss Fortune Story Reel

So here is my idea for my action analysis! i spent a decent amount of time on the boards (i also learned that i work a little better under pressure :)) but i spent hardly any time trying to time it (found out i work terribly under a shit tonne of pressure) sooo i'm going to fix it when i can.. I also had to cut out a lot of panels and the big thing that happens at the end b/c we needed to have it 30 seconds maximum :( oh well i'll add them some other time i guess! I also need to add some music! i found the perfect track for this :D i cant wait to put it together!! Any ways, here it is! Miss Fortune :)

also for anyone who is unfamiliar with this sheridan assignment, there will be a fully animated and composited scene cut into this by the end of the semester :)

**EDIT! theres music now :) the timing will be fixed for the final product tho, i dont know how long the animation will be yet :p

Bobby Chiu came into sheridan and gave a little talk and he mentioned the importance of keeping up your online presence and i remembered my long neglected blog and my stomach did a little flip. heres something old that i drew in layout class! just found it on my computer and forgot it existed until now! A Bug I Would Hug...

I'm collaborating with a classmate from school to get this bug modeled and rigged :) I really dislike modeling so far so i'm going to see how I like animating, and i figured this little guy would be an awesome character to start off with! yikes its been a while since i last posted! I've been incredibly busy story boarding and re-boarding and re-reboarding this beast....and i'm afraid its still no good :( so to get away from all of that i decided to take a break and paint this....it serves no particular purpose (b/c i wont be colouring any final animation... I think!) just a little unwinder! and its nice to be able to share something b/c everything else is currently in a state that is embarrassing to share....

the amount of work that needs to go into this little 3 minute song is crazy! i knew it would be a lot of work but I guess it doesnt hit you until you actually have to do it!! also i'm hoping that something from this project will be portfolio quality :( we'll see!!

my version of Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre! I was experimenting with using different brushes in Photoshop and tried to keep this a little more loose and sketchy :) it only took an hour or so to paint and i generally like the feel of it. I think i'll be trying out more like this!

I just finished reading Jane Eyre last night and it was wonderful :) heres a little doodle I did of Jane! I have a Mr Rochester and Blanch Ingram on there way too and some Emily of New Moon Sketches! (oh goodness i'm so dorky) I've just been reading a lot of wonderful books lately and I've been influenced :)

does anyone have any book suggestions? I've just read 4 books all with pretty serious/ kind of sad/ bittersweet endings and i want something a little more light hearted! I have Robinson Crusoe that i might read.. do you know of any classics that are happy? :s lol

This summer i'm attempting to animated (or partially animate?) the song "Popular" from the musical "Wicked" :) I was inspired by the storyboards by Heidi Jo Gilbert to attempt to do something that i actually wanted to see! i was also trying to emulate the style of Secret of Kells and I'm a Monster with these designs (theyre very rough, they were just done so i kind of had an idea of the characters to start my boards!). hopefully by the end of the summer, i'll have a leica reel with some pencil test animation cut into it and a bunch of layout and design work! I have a ton of work ahead of me, but i'm excited :)

i would love some critiques on these designs and how you think they might work (or not work) when animated!

Pirate Ship Tonal

Tonal study for my pirate ship layout assignment :) The top one was photoshoped (it looks a lot better!) but I really like the bottom one (its nice and soft) so i thought i would include it in my post! again, this was lots of fun! tried to do the Paul Felix thing...it didnt work D: but i'm pretty pleased with the final outcome! a lot of the values are similar, but i just couldn't push myself anymore :( damn deadlines and achy hand... well i'll be back with a shot test, once i add the slow in and slow out. its crazy how jarring a camera move can be without it!

Inspired by Amy He's "What I Wore" drawings, which were inspired by Victoria Ying's "What I Wore" Drawings which I'm pretty sure were inspired by someone else's drawings.... theres just a whole lot of inspiration going around!

I wore this outfit yesterday while I watched Bonnie and Clyde and Black Narcissus which were both amazing!! They both got me thinking ALOT...which might not be the best thing when your running on 2 hours of sleep. I really recommend Black Narcissus if you haven't already seen it its a beautiful film!

I was having a pretty tough time roughing out the composition so I got help from a few friends :) Thanks so much Anita, Alyssa, Mikey and Lisa, you guys really saved me! The composition is much better than what I started out with, and I will hopefully be reworking this again with some help in layout class tomorrow! I'm still in the work book stage for this project and I cant wait to get started on final layouts :)

I've been working on this painting bit by bit in between school work and its killing me that I cant give it my full attention! I'm going to force my self to stop and do some actual work now! I thought I would just post a tiny preview :) The character is from my period character design pack which was 17th century pirates. I'm really trying to find the happy medium between a fully rendered and graphic approach (if that makes sense) Well we will see how this turns out in a few weeks I guess!

Today in life drawing class we did some creature designs. I decided on a peacock/harpie type thing. I wish I had done something a little crazier :s oh well! Here are the results :) I'm not one to usually draw creature designs but I must say it can be pretty fun! I've never really been drawn to layout but I've recently realized it incorporates a lot of what I really like to do. The perspective and technical aspects have always thrown my interest off but I really had fun with this assignment :) well I had a lot more fun with prop design (which I will post in a few hours once its scanned and cleaned up.) Its obviously not perfect, but I'm happy with the result, especially since my feelings towards layout have done a complete 180!

This layout is based on a type of ship called a cravel, and its a pirate ship!! arrr..

One of the many exploratory sketches I've done to try and develop the relationship of "the hero" and "the one they love" for my character design project. I think I've pretty much got the mermaid character's design down, but I'm still working on the hero... I wanted to have contrast in their shapes, the hero is more angular and kind of square and the mermaid is rounded, but I think I'll just round them both off :)

critiques are very welcome :) Id love to get a second opinion on these before i got to final

I wasnt able to do much extra life drawing for a few months because of the tendinitis, but now that i'm feeling much better I've managed to fit in a few extra sessions this week! I feel like I've had very little progress this year in terms of my life drawing abilities, but now that I'm able to life draw again, I hope I'll improve by leaps and bounds! I'm really enjoying costume sessions, and I LOVE drawing drapery now :) I cant wait to get back into improving my technical skills!

Hansel and Gretel

Done for digital painting class. This was a very different approach to painting...I'm not too sure that I like the end result :s we were told to create the painting in greyscale first then adjust the colour balance of each level. Working this way made it very difficult for me to pick colours, so I'm not sure if I'll be trying this again anytime soon (maybe a variation on this approach)

Well here it is! I'm pretty sure everyone has this idea of doing the adorable little candy house in the middle of a creepy forest, heres my take on it :)

oh and I hope everyone is having a happy Family Day!! (I'm not sure if Ontario is the only place that has it, but hope I its going great for everyone whos got the long weekend!)

drew some mermaids today for my character design assignment, then I started adding colour and it took over my day. I drew and coloured a whole bunch of other character concepts that i might post in a bit, so for now...here they are :) (the second one is my favorite!)

also, uploading these onto blogger really destroyed the colours :s the lines look really harsh and strange... hhmm.

A new character! I thought her up on the car ride to school this morning :) Shes very inspired by my best friend who loves music and has red hair :D

This was motivated by a conversation I had with Naomi awhile back about creating a character that is all your own that you can draw and develop over time and really get to know. When I looked through her sketchbook I saw the evolution of so many of her characters and I really wanted to try sticking to one and seeing how her personality and design will change over time :) lets hope I stick with it!!

Contrasting Character Poses

DONE! finally! I slowly (and i mean SLOWLY) worked on these throughout the week and i'm glad that i dont need to worry about this anymore :) I didnt post the rotations because..well.. rotations are boring!

I also found out that I have tendinitis in my right hand D: Its from over use (due to drawing) but it hasnt gotten too bad so I can take care of it (thank goodness!!) I will definitely impart my wisdom of hand care with all you fellow artists so you can take care of your money makers as well! So far i have been instructed to ice it for 5 minutes before i start a drawing day, 5 minutes after i have finished for the day and ice it as needed in between if the pain is too much! I'm also going for some acupuncture, so i'll tell you all how that goes :s

this is a panel from my final story board. I'm still in the process of adding 3 panels to the ending and i should be done soon!

i upped the contrast in photoshop a bit (maybe a little too much...) because the original is a tiny bit too dull for what i wanted to achieve. i wanted to capture the really lush greens of the jungle but it sort of ended up with the colour pallet of a forest.. :p

everyone in class really seemed to enjoy my colour key, so i decided to share it with you all on my blog!

I just want to say thank you to all my followers :) i know 48 isnt A LOT but it makes me happy to think that there are people who actually read my blog and look at my art! I had the wave and some of the boat completed but i did alot of it over the weekend :) i'm not one hundred percent satisfied with the animation i produced BUT i am proud of myself for finishing it before the deadline despite all of the other work i had!

so here is a pretty-fied and Disney-fied version of what i might look like as a disney princess. (an angry and yellow disney princess..... uploading it made the colours change... :s)

I also did a rotation of Jim Hawkins from Disney's Treasure Planet over the summer, just for fun :) I have a few minor things to fix and then i'll upload the whole thing! Theres also a little surprise at the end with morph instead of doing a lip sync :D I cant wait to finish this up!

Recently i joined a character design website called Mojizu. Its really neat! You upload your characters and then other mojizu users vote. if you get enough votes, your moji goes to battle, theres 3 rounds and then a super match! its really neat, and its been a nice motivator for me to do some digital work :)

i didnt exactly watch the tangents in the skull reaper guy... i kind of cringe a little bit when i see it. maybe a reaper man version 2 is on its way! the top one is Grizzly Jack resurrected with some colour! I have yet to put him up on mojizu tho :p

I made some monsters out of unused socks that I had! I actually really love getting socks as presents, but these ones were...interesting. so i flipped them inside out so you cant see the pattern and made them into something cool!

They're made entirely of recycled products, old buttons, socks and they're even stuffed with shredded left over fabrics from my aunt's clothing shop :) If anyone wants to know how to make these, let me know and I'll post a little How To!

These will be sold at my table at the New Bloor Street Festival! I'll post more about it closer to the festival date, and hopefully I'll see you there!

After watching Shrek forever after I needed to get the ogres out of my system. I'm working on a little character design pack of a much better design for an ogre, but i thought i would post the doodle that led to the super idea first!

the reason i'm not particularly happy with this, is that his bottom half looks a little dis connected to his top half. His legs are just too long and not dumpy enough, But then again this just started off as a doodle that went out of control...

and again, this paper looks like oatmealie barf!!

FINALLY finished this assignment!! I thought I could do it in about a day and a half but it took MUCH longer! I'm not super pleased with the results, her eyes slide all over the place, and her hands are not the greatest, but i do like the design :) I just wish I could have spent more time to keep her on model..

These are my very first animal character designs! Or even just the first time I've drawn animals for fun. I used to avoid it like the plague, but I realize how many more options there are when drawing animals, so I think I'll be doing a lot more of it :)

The bears are some early stages of a character for character design class, but I don't know what the story for him will be... I'm trying to stay away from the generic bear wants honey plot ...but its all that keeps coming to mind!
